The Dumping Ground: A Growing Hazard
The illegal waste dump, located near a primary school in the village of Bickershaw, has already caused a major incident. Last summer, it caught fire for a staggering 10 days, forcing the school to close and residents to shut their windows due to hazardous fumes. With the potential for further fires as the weather warms up, the situation is only set to worsen.
Lady Shas Sheehan, chair of the Lords environment committee, has called for an urgent clean-up, citing not only the environmental risks but also the public health implications. She argues that the Environment Agency should step in, despite their lack of funding for such operations, especially given their recent efforts to clear illegal waste in Kidlington, Oxfordshire.

The Environment Agency has drawn up plans to remove the waste in Wigan, but only if funds become available. This decision has been defended by the minister, who claims that the Bolton House Road site does not carry the same level of risk as other cases.
And this is the part most people miss...
The largest area of land on which the waste has been dumped in Wigan has no owner, and has now reverted to the Duchy of Lancaster. The Environment Agency and its partners currently have no power to force the Duchy to clear the land.
Criminal investigations are ongoing, with four men arrested in connection with the illegal dumping in Kidlington.
A spokesperson for the Duchy of Lancaster has stated their commitment to working with Wigan Council and the Environment Agency to address the issue.
