But here's where it gets controversial—fugu is a dish that can be both tantalizing and treacherous. When prepared correctly, it's a mouthwatering delicacy, but one wrong move, and it could be your last meal. So, we embarked on a taste test to celebrate Fugu Day with a unique bento experience.
Our quest led us to Awajiya, a Kobe-based bento maker, for three compelling reasons. Firstly, Awajiya is renowned for using top-notch seafood in their bento creations. Secondly, their fugu bento is a collaboration with Genpin, a beloved fugu restaurant chain. And lastly, the bento container itself is a work of art that we simply couldn't resist.
Bento, often translated as 'boxed lunch,' typically comes in square or rectangular containers. However, Awajiya is known for its signature tako bento, which breaks the mold with ceramic pots adorned with an octopus motif. And their fugu bento follows suit, arriving safely wrapped in bubble wrap, ready to delight.
