Current State of Affairs

The WWE's tag team division has been a bit of a wild ride lately, with a mix of old and new teams, and a few interesting rumors floating around. It's clear that the division needs a shake-up, and it's time to take a look at some potential solutions. Here's a breakdown of the current state of affairs and some ideas for the future.

Raw

Bron Breakker and Austin Theory are the current World Tag Team champions on Raw, and are currently feuding with Seth Rollins and the Street Profits. With Angelo Dawkins left off TV to sell a beatdown from a few weeks ago, Rollins teaming with Ford for the tag titles could be lined up in the coming weeks. Outside of that, the Usos are around but busy with Bloodline business, and Alpha Academy, Los Americanos, the Creed Brothers, and the recently formed team of Ethan Page and Rusev round out the red brands tag ranks.

Smackdown

Damian Priest and R-Truth are the reigning WWE Tag Team champions and will be defending their titles against Tama and Talla Tonga next week. Besides those two teams, there is a pretty steep drop off. Fraxiom has been around but has been featured more on NXT in recent weeks. Angel and Berto made an appearance in a backstage segment with Danhausen last week after recent rumors that they could be leaving the company. The War Raiders had a brief cameo two weeks ago, and of course, there’s the team of Kit Wilson and The Miz lurking as well.

NXT

The NXT tag team division has a decent amount of teams currently active, but there still hasn’t been a ton of attention on them in recent weeks. Baylor and Smokes of the Vanity Project are the current champions, but have only had 2 televised title defenses since winning the titles in February. Former champs DarkState and Hank & Tank are in the mix, with OTM and Birth Right lurking as well. Noam Dar and Romeo Moreno have been teaming up recently and last week, we also saw buff Macklemore Sean Legacy and Dorian Van Dux discussing the prospects of teaming up after a suggestion from Tavion Heights.

Potential Solutions

Feature Current Teams Better

The easiest fix to their problem is to get back to basics and simply feature the teams they already have on their roster. Even after the latest round of roster cuts a few months ago saw established (and legendary) teams like the Machine Guns and New Day leaving the company, there are still several teams lingering on each brand. Would it be believable to heat up the Alpha Academy or Los Garza as legitimate top teams? Maybe not right away. But if they give some of those teams more opportunities to work on weekly programming, there’s nothing saying they won’t find a diamond in the rough and have a team catch fire.

Reunite Former Teams

There aren’t a ton of great immediate options here, but there are a few former teams that could make a splash if they were to reunite.

Create New Teams

This option provides some interesting fantasy booking possibilities. Looking up and down the current WWE roster, there are surprisingly not a ton of characters that are sitting around with nothing to do right now.

Bring Back Old Teams

In this writer’s opinion, bringing back old teams should only be the play if you’ve already exhausted some of the options listed above. There has been talk in the last few weeks of Enzo Amore being back on WWE’s radar, and with his former partner Big Bill (formerly Big Cass in WWE) potentially running out his AEW contract in the coming months, the rumor of the SAWFT duo coming back to the WWE seemed to have some legs to it.

Conclusion

The WWE's tag team division is in need of a shake-up, and it's time to take a look at some potential solutions. By featuring current teams better, reuniting former teams, creating new teams, and bringing back old teams, the WWE can breathe new life into the division and create some exciting storylines. It's time to get creative and make the tag team division the star of the show it deserves to be.
