Racing Weather and Inspection Updates: Britain and Ireland's Wet Conditions and Race Schedule

The latest news on racing inspections and cancellations as wet weather persists across Britain and Ireland. Despite the challenging conditions, Newbury Racecourse remains optimistic about Saturday's major event.

In an interview with Sky Sports Racing on Wednesday, Clerk of the Course George Hill expressed confidence in the track's readiness. He stated, 'We had nearly ten millimeters of rain last night, but today is dry. This morning, we assessed the hurdles track as heavy and soft in certain areas, while the chase course is slightly better, with soft and heavy patches.'

Hill further explained the upcoming weather forecast, mentioning more rain on Thursday and Friday, with potential showers on Saturday. He assured that the ground conditions will be a mix of heavy and soft, but the race will proceed without significant issues.

Newbury's drainage system has proven effective, even with substantial rainfall. Since the last meeting on January 14th, 116 millimeters of rain have fallen, compared to 61 millimeters at the same time last year. Hill noted, 'Despite the increase in rainfall, the track has handled it well, and we're excited for the upcoming races on Saturday. We anticipate the top horses to declare on Thursday morning.'

However, not all races have been as fortunate. Sandown Park's Friday all-chase Grand Military Gold Cup meeting was canceled due to a waterlogged track. Course officials conducted an early morning inspection and, after another 10mm of rain on Tuesday, deemed the course unraceable.

Further rain is expected in the Esher area on Thursday and race day, leading to the meeting's abandonment. Efforts are underway to reschedule the Grand Military Gold Cup for a future date.
