Police Chase and Arrests: Teenagers on the Run in Hobart's South (2026)

Bold start: A high-stakes motorcycle chase ends with three teens in custody after police use drones to track them from Hobart’s south to Opossum Bay. But here’s where it gets controversial: does drone technology change how we handle dangerous riding, or does it raise new privacy concerns for everyday surveillance?

Three teenagers were arrested after a dramatic pursuit that began with reckless motorbike riding and concluded with officers deploying drones to locate the suspects through Opossum Bay.

An 18-year-old man and two 16-year-old boys were taken into custody after allegedly attempting to flee on motorcycles and then abandoning them to run on foot this afternoon.

The incident kicked off when members of the public reported two motorcycles being ridden dangerously along South Arm Highway past Rokeby around 3:35 pm, with the riders heading toward South Arm.

Police mounted a substantial response, including uniformed officers and drone units, to search the South Arm and Opossum Bay regions.

The operation lasted about an hour, wrapping up at approximately 4:35 pm.

Police described the incident as stemming from earlier reports that two motorcycles were being ridden in a dangerous manner, received from members of the public this afternoon.

Officials said the trio initially tried to escape on their bikes before abandoning them and fleeing on foot through Opossum Bay.

The arrests come amid rising community concerns over dangerous riding in the area.

Police noted that their investigation will review a number of recent complaints about similar driving behavior in the Clarence area over the past week.

The use of drone technology enabled officers to track and safely detain the three suspects without further incident.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about today’s events to come forward. They’re especially interested in dashcam footage that captures the alleged dangerous riding.

If you have information about today’s incident, or dashcam footage of the alleged dangerous driving, contact police on 131 444, or report anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via crimestopperstas.com.au.
