The NHL is set to make history with the Winter Classic in Miami! The upcoming match between the New York Rangers and Florida Panthers promises to be an extraordinary outdoor experience, taking place on January 1, 2026. This event marks a significant milestone as it will be the first time the NHL hosts an outdoor game in the warm climate of Florida, specifically at loanDepot park, which is primarily home to the Miami Marlins of Major League Baseball.
On a recent Tuesday evening, NHL officials gathered in a control room at the venue, eagerly preparing for what could have been a pivotal test moment. They meticulously orchestrated the opening of the sliding glass panels and the retractable roof above the field, aiming to simulate conditions for the game day. NHL executive vice president of events, Dean Matsuzaki, recalled the countdown: "We were like, 'Ten, nine, eight... Open!'"
The result of this test was somewhat amusing; a few palm trees and flamingos toppled over amid the festive decorations, which Matsuzaki humorously described as "a little anticlimactic but definitely necessary." He emphasized that such a calm outcome was indeed what they had hoped for. At the time of the test, the temperature at ice level hovered around 58 degrees Fahrenheit, very similar to what one would expect during a typical indoor NHL game, suggesting that the conditions for the actual game might not break any records for warmth.
Derek King, the NHL's vice president of hockey operations, pointed out that forecasts indicated moderate temperatures, which could lead to favorable conditions by the time the puck drops. He expressed optimism about the cooler nights leading up to the event, saying, "It’s exciting."
The NHL has previously organized 43 outdoor games under various weather conditions, gaining invaluable insights from each experience, which gave them confidence in scheduling this innovative game in Miami. With the roof closed and air conditioning running optimally at 60 to 64 degrees while the ice was being prepared, officials were keen to ensure everything would go smoothly.
Matsuzaki also reminisced about a challenge faced during a previous outdoor game at BC Place in Vancouver, where unexpected wind caused disruption after opening the roof. This memory fueled his desire for a thorough test this time around, ensuring no surprises would occur on game day.
During the test, the sliding doors in left field opened seamlessly in about four minutes, unveiling the stunning Miami skyline, followed by the retractable roof, which took approximately 15 minutes to fully retract. Much to their relief, there was minimal temperature fluctuation and no disruptive winds, allowing the palm trees and beach umbrellas to remain undisturbed.
"I think we learned that we're in a pretty good spot," Matsuzaki reflected. "We have a few minor adjustments to make, possibly replacing some flamingos, but overall, everything looks positive."
In a first for the league, two Mobile Refrigeration Units are being utilized instead of just one to maintain the ice quality. Despite this, King noted that the refrigeration systems were operating at only half capacity, indicating sufficient ice conditions were being achieved. The ice crew practiced various resurfacing techniques while maintaining a close watch on air and ice temperatures.
Initially intended to run tests throughout a full game’s duration, King concluded the evaluation early, feeling confident that they had gathered enough information. "We never got above 60 degrees during the test, which aligns perfectly with our indoor standards, making me feel optimistic about the conditions for the game," he stated, enjoying the mild breeze that accompanied the open roof.
As excitement builds for this historic event, King humorously remarked on the advantageous weather conditions for an outdoor game in Miami, declaring, "You couldn't ask for anything more!"
