Bold headline: New light rail stations opening this weekend in Kent, Des Moines, and Federal Way, promising easier commutes and fewer cars on the road.
Three fresh Link light rail stations are set to open on Saturday, expanding the network to connect Seattle with Kent, Des Moines, and Federal Way. Sound Transit projects daily ridership at these new stops—Kent Des Moines, Star Lake, and Federal Way—between 20,000 and 23,000 riders, a figure that could ease traffic congestion along I-5.
“We’re taking a significant number of cars off the highway,” said Sound Transit spokesperson Luke Lamon. “This shift benefits the broader environment by giving people more transportation options around the Sound.”
The newly added stations will integrate with regional transit services, including Sound Transit Express, King County Metro, and Pierce County Transit, with design prioritizing seamless transfers between buses and the light rail.
Pacifica, a Kent resident who commutes to SeaTac Airport, shared the relief of not needing to drive and emphasized how the expansion could benefit many families.
Sound Transit projects travel times such as a 16-minute ride from Federal Way to SeaTac Airport and about 50 minutes from Federal Way to downtown Seattle. From Kent Des Moines to downtown Seattle, the trip is estimated at roughly 42 minutes.
Riders note potential cost savings when traveling to the airport, with some citing the price advantage over rideshares. One rider, Alex Carter, described choosing the light rail to avoid a $100 Uber fare.
Looking ahead, the extension to Bellevue is anticipated to wrap up in early 2026, while Sound Transit continues testing trains over Lake Washington. Pacifica expressed optimism about the broader impact: better mobility for all, including individuals with disabilities, and fewer cars on the road.
"I hope this is just the start," Pacifica added, underscoring the importance of accessible, car-free travel options for the whole community.
