Museveni's Meeting with UAE Investors: A Boost for Uganda's Transport Sector (2026)

In a significant move towards enhancing Uganda’s transport infrastructure, President Museveni recently engaged with a group of investors from the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This delegation has shown keen interest in developing an inland port that could greatly improve the country’s cargo transport capabilities.

Founded in 1970 through an Amiri decree by the Ruler of Sharjah, the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry plays a vital role in fostering economic activities across various sectors such as trade, industry, agriculture, digital services, and professional sectors, working closely with relevant governmental bodies and institutions.

The discussion took place at the State Lodge in Nakasero, led by Farid Belbouab, who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Gulftainer Co. Ltd. During this meeting, the investors put forward a proposal aimed at streamlining the handling processes of goods arriving at and departing from dry ports. Their goal is to reduce operational costs and enhance overall efficiency in regional trade.

The investors shared with President Museveni that they are currently in negotiations with the Ugandan government and aim to complete the initial phase of the project within the next six months. The President encouraged them to accelerate their efforts in this regard, highlighting the critical nature of such infrastructure developments.

"Infrastructure projects like these are crucial," President Museveni stated, emphasizing that they not only create numerous job opportunities but also boost the usage of essential services, including water and electricity. "Uganda stands to gain significantly from the employment generated through these projects, which also stimulate local businesses."

He further pointed out that while dry ports are instrumental in facilitating the movement of goods, their primary focus should be on optimizing logistics instead of imposing heavy taxes, which can impede trade.

Expressing his strong support for the initiative, President Museveni remarked, "I wholeheartedly welcome this initiative and will ensure government backing for its successful implementation."

The overarching theme of the meeting revolved around enhancing trade facilitation, improving the logistics framework, and attracting more investments into Uganda’s transportation and storage sectors. This aligns with broader objectives aimed at promoting regional integration and stimulating economic growth.
