Malaysia's Senate: 3 Ministers Sworn In for Second Term (2025)

Bold statement: Key ministers secure a second term as senators, signaling stability even as a looming cabinet reshuffle looms over the capital. But here’s where it gets controversial: not all voices will see continuity as enough amid ongoing vacancies and shifting portfolios.

KUALA LUMPUR: Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Higher Education Minister Zambry Abd Kadir, and Religious Affairs Minister Na’im Mokthar were sworn in for a second term as senators today. The ceremony took place at the outset of the current Senate session, with the oaths administered before Dewan Negara President Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah. All three first took their oaths as senators in December 2022.

Their renewed appointments come at a time of anticipation surrounding a potential cabinet reshuffle, as multiple posts remain unfilled. Notably, four positions are currently vacant.

In recent months, changes at the top have contributed to the vacancies: Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli and Natural Resources and Environment Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad resigned in May, while Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Ewon Benedick stepped down last month. The investment, trade, and industry portfolio also remains unfilled following Tengku Zafrul Aziz’s term as senator ending on December 2—the maximum allowed under the Federal Constitution.

In the interim, Finance Minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan has been overseeing the economy portfolio, and Plantation and Commodities Minister Johari Ghani has been handling Natural Resources and Environment Sustainability. Ewon’s former portfolio is currently being managed by Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi.

Controversy-minded readers may wonder: will the renewed senatorial presence translate into tangible policy stability, or will it simply mark a temporary pause before a broader reshuffle? Share your thoughts in the comments: should ministers maintain their posts through reshuffles, or is a refreshed lineup necessary to address evolving national priorities?
