Attention Oakland County Drivers: Major I-696 Construction Begins, Expect Detours and Delays
Starting today, over 100,000 Oakland County drivers will encounter significant changes as the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) launches a crucial phase of the I-696 reconstruction project.
The construction, which began at 4:30 a.m. on November 15th, involves shutting down all westbound lanes between I-75 and Telegraph Road, a closure that will persist until fall 2026. This marks a pivotal moment in the highway's transformation.
On Monday, November 17th, at 5 a.m., MDOT will redirect westbound traffic onto the newly constructed eastbound lanes. This shift necessitates careful planning for drivers.
MDOT spokesperson Brian Travis emphasizes the importance of preparation: "A lot of preparation has to happen this weekend to push traffic to the other side." Construction crews are busy relocating temporary concrete barriers and installing new pavement markings and signage.

Missing the westbound entrance won't be a simple fix; drivers will need to exit at I-75 and re-enter at a different point.
A critical decision point will be Couzens Avenue, where drivers must choose between continuing west on I-696 or merging onto I-75. While access to several major ramps remains, drivers will temporarily lose access to the Coolidge Highway and Greenfield Road ramps.
