Bold opening beats set the stage as Vipers claim victory in season opener with Gous blitz
Andries Gous produced a scintillating 58 from 36 balls, pairing with Fakhar Zaman to launch Desert Vipers’ chase in the ILT20 curtain-raiser. The defending champions, Dubai Capitals, fought back in the middle overs but couldn’t defend a total of 150/8.
Gous and Zaman carved out a commanding start, singeing the opposition with a 21-run onslaught off left-arm quick Muhammad Jawadullah in the fourth over, including two fours and two sixes. Zaman followed with a six off Mohammad Nabi in the fifth over, only to be dismissed a ball later. By then the pair had already stitched 50 for the first wicket, wiping out a third of the target in just 4.4 overs. Gous also capitalized in the PowerPlay’s final over, blasting Scott Currie for three fours as the Vipers closed the initial six overs at 64/1. A pace-friendly lull followed, but Desert Vipers remained ahead.
After the strategic timeout, Gulbadin Naib struck, removing Max Holden. Waqar Salamkheil then delivered a double-wicket over, sending back Sam Curran and Gous, briefly reigniting hope for Dubai. Yet even at that juncture the Vipers held the advantage with 42 runs needed from as many deliveries. Dan Lawrence came out swinging, and Shimron Hetmyer added a few boundaries, further denting the required rate. Currie halted Hetmyer’s resurgence, but the scoreline stood at 23 off 30 balls. Haider Ali delivered a tight four-run over to keep Capitals in contention, and Currie followed with a miserly over as well, conceding just a single run in four balls while dismissing Hasan Nawaz on the fifth ball, though Khuzaima Tanveer struck the first ball for a boundary. Lawrence and Tanveer then finished the job, collecting the remaining 14 runs across the next two overs to seal the win.
Preceding the chase, the Vipers’ bowlers laid the foundation. Naseem Shah, Curran, Jordon Cox, and Tanveer reduced Dubai to 42/4 by the seventh over. David Willey struggled to 10 off 22 before Noor Ahmad cleaned him up. Powell found Nabi for support, adding 34 off 22, nudging the Capitals just past the 100-mark, until Tanveer struck again to dismiss Powell. Nabi and Shanaka then unleashed a flurry of boundaries, collecting 48 runs in the final five overs to reach 150, but that target proved insufficient.
