A looming crisis in the tech industry is about to hit us hard, and it's all because of a simple metal: copper. The next wave of price hikes for PC components is on the horizon, and it's not just memory shortages we need to worry about.
Copper, an essential raw material for electronics, is in short supply and its price has skyrocketed. Roman Hartung, CEO of Thermal Grizzly, a company specializing in high-performance cooling solutions, has sounded the alarm. According to Hartung, copper is now more expensive and harder to come by, with orders taking months to fulfill. He recently shared his struggles in a YouTube video, detailing how a simple order of 12mm copper plates, usually costing around €190 with a quick turnaround, now comes with a €280 price tag and a four-month wait.
But here's where it gets controversial: Hartung believes the global copper supply isn't as dire as it seems. He argues that President Trump's tariffs caused a shift in copper stocks from Europe and Asia to the US, creating local shortages and driving up prices. "The global copper supply is actually not that bad," Hartung says, "but local shortages still impact the price."
And it's not just copper. Tin, another crucial material, has seen a massive price increase of 60-80%. Hartung's investigation into other raw materials reveals a stark contrast, with aluminum and nickel prices barely budging, and steel prices even dropping.
The increased demand for AI compute and its components is undoubtedly a factor in this shortage. But Hartung also points to the impact of Trump's tariffs, which led companies to stockpile materials in the US, exacerbating the issue.
The consequences are already being felt. Hartung predicts Thermal Grizzly will have to increase GPU block pricing, and he's not alone. Alphacool and Be Quiet!, two other major players in the industry, are facing similar challenges. Alphacool's CEO, Andreas Rutnicki, has announced a 5-10% price increase across all products by the end of February, with copper-based products taking the biggest hit due to raw material price increases.
And this is the part most people miss: the impact of these shortages and price hikes extends beyond just the cost of PC components. It affects the entire tech industry, from data centers to servers and power supply units. Copper is used in virtually every electronic device, and its scarcity will have wide-reaching implications.
So, what's next? Hartung and other industry leaders are looking for solutions, but the path forward is unclear. Will we see a shift in production to regions with better infrastructure, like Eastern Europe? Or will the industry find a way to adapt and mitigate the impact of these shortages?
